Home Maintenance Tip: Check Your Attic and Crawlspace Twice a Year

One of the simplest maintenance habits homeowners can build is checking the attic and crawlspace at least twice a year.
These are areas of the home that are easy to forget about because we do not see them every day. But they can reveal early signs of problems long before those issues become obvious inside the house.

Recently, we noticed that a critter had been chewing through the edge of a piece of siding. From the outside, it was hard to tell whether anything was actually getting into the crawlspace, but it looked suspicious enough that I wanted to take a closer look.
Sure enough, when I checked inside the crawlspace, there were fresh rodent droppings.
We called a pest control company to inspect the area and address the issue. They found the entry point and plugged the hole in the siding. Thankfully, they told us we caught it early, before much damage had been done.
That is exactly why these inspections matter.
Small problems often start quietly. A gap near the siding, a loose vent screen, a bit of moisture, disturbed insulation, or fresh pest activity can go unnoticed for months if nobody checks.
In the Pacific Northwest, this is especially important. Our damp climate can make crawlspace and attic issues more serious over time. Moisture, pests, damaged insulation, blocked ventilation, and small exterior openings can all create bigger problems if ignored.
When checking your attic or crawlspace, look for:
Signs of rodents or insects
Moisture or standing water
Damaged or fallen insulation
Chewed wood, wiring, or siding
Gaps around vents or exterior openings
Musty odors
Evidence of leaks
Anything that looks different from the last time you checked
You can do a basic visual inspection yourself if you are comfortable and it is safe to access. Otherwise, it is worth having a professional take a look.
The goal is not to find problems. The goal is to catch small issues before they become expensive ones.
A quick attic and crawlspace check twice a year can help protect your home, preserve its value, and reduce unpleasant surprises later.
